This is an essay done in english class about why i believe steroids should stay illegal. Wednesday, December 9, Posted by John at Monday, December 7, Illegal Steroids. Steroids affect the hormones and the protein synthesis within the cells which leads to the buildup of cellular tissue anabolism , especially in muscles.
Steroids also affect the sexual hormones which can change masculinity of people. Also the chemicals can cause depression and adverse cardio problems. Technically steroids just cause a lot of bad things. At the time being steroids are legal to an extent but I think steroids should be fully illegal except for prescription use from doctors only in small dosages. I believe that steroids are way to harmful for society because our society as it is cannot handle the drug for what it is intended for.
People abuse things way too much and drugs are a major category to that statement. It is getting so bad that kids are even using them and there have been many reported deaths which are in my mind, very wrong.
There are many loopholes in the system which I think need to be corrected or re-enforced. The only warnings people get are reports where famous people have breakdowns for example Chris Benoit who went crazy and murdered his family then committed suicide. To first understand steroids you need to know what they are and what they do. Not only in retrospect to your life but to your body in general. To know what effects steroids have a little background on the drug is necessary.
The core is a carbon structure of four fused rings: The steroids vary by the functional groups attached to these rings and the oxidation state of the rings. They increase protein synthesis within cells, which results in the buildup of cellular tissue anabolism , especially in muscles.
Anabolic steroids also have androgenic and virilizing properties, including the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics such as the growth of the vocal cords and body hair. Wikipedia Steroids were originally meant to strengthen and enhance the muscles for medical use but like all drugs were eventually taken advantage of and abused.
With too much use in the wrong ways, bad things happen. Things like unsterilized needles gave things like AIDS to the users. People would try to inject themselves and miss the veins, or damage the veins, all kinds of harm to their selves. Also when you take so much steroids there are side effects like most other drugs.
These effects include harmful changes in cholesterol levels increased low-density lipoprotein and decreased high-density lipoprotein , acne, high blood pressure, liver damage, and dangerous changes in the structure of the left ventricle of the heart.
Severe depression and acts of outrage can occur. Unstable emotions form from the constant change in the hormone imbalance. Also reverse puberty such as growth of breasts in young males. Another famous characteristic is the shrinking of the testicles. I cannot be so blind and ignore the effect of the steroids in this horrible case of tragedy. Laboratory analysis revealed hypocalcaemia, elevated liver enzymes and high levels of amylase, lipase and creatine protein kinase.
When entering the hospital the first thing noticed by the doctors were the severe lesions and open sores covering the chest, shoulders, back, and stomach.
This intense treatment of topical ointments, antibiotics, and other treatment the lacerations finally healed but he was left with permanent scars all over his body where the wounds were. Another study indicated that 1,, Americans, or 0. These are just a couple of examples of how widespread the problem has become. At an alarming rate more and more adolescents use steroids without thinking twice about them. I believe that steroids are a bad way to reach your desired results for your body. People are too lazy anymore to try and do some hard work that they need to result to an alternative.
With steroids so easy to purchase and so common among young people it is hard to inform them of other, safer supplements. The use of protein shakes, creatine pills, good diet, pure glutamine. Those are just a few of the things but anything could be better than resorting to steroids. Steroids are an extreme drug with extreme side effects. If students were presented with the suicides, side effects short term and long term , and depression I think that kids could get a little sense out of the situation.
Many adults in America use steroids also, many of which are either professional or amateur sports players. When a child watches a news report about another baseball player or football player or whomever using steroids they can get the wrong ideas. These adults need to remember that children idolize these people and repeat anything and everything they see. How could anyone get anything accomplished for trying to teach these kids that steroids are bad when some of the richest, most successful people in the world use them?
What kind of message does that send the children? The media could be included in this effort also. If the media could report more on the bad parts of the case where a player uses steroids I think that kids would see what really happens.
Just think what could happen if a celebrity would go on television and tell kids that steroids are bad and talk it up that real athletes use hard work and build muscle the natural way!
Parents also should learn to talk to their children about steroids, such as talking about healthy competition, eating healthy and getting enough rest and informing them of how much the bad effect outweigh the good. Only in medical procedures do steroids help a patient. Steroids are meant to do the following things like HIV, and speed up puberty, and support bone growth. When used in medicine steroids are in small concentrated quantities. How steroids get into public in masses is beyond me but it needs to be stopped somehow through law enforcement or by changing the views of America.
Steroids are Drugs and are not safe. Some people think of steroids like cosmetic surgery. They think if someone can go pay for a nose job or boob job then they should be able to pay for steroids to get muscles. Cosmetic surgery is done by a professional surgeon and is relatively safe with no side effect, opposed to injecting yourself with drugs to change your appearance.
Another thing pertaining to physical appearance is that if someone is so insecure with their appearance they should understand what you end up looking like when you go too far with the steroids or if you suddenly stop. It results in sagging skin, spots, and sores on the skin, baldness, forming of the opposite sex characteristics. I think the main problem is that people just need to open there eyes and the only way to do that is to inform these people. Even when I was young the only bad thing I knew about steroids was that it shrunk your testicles and that it was illegal.
Not until I turned 18 did I learn about these other side effects! I even got lucky by finding out by being informed instead of some of the children out there that will find out the hard way by getting firsthand experience to the use of steroids. I believe that steroids should remain illegal due to the many things they do.
If steroids were to become legal it would just further the assumption that they have no harm to you, which is false. Despite what any ill minded protestor may say to the point the law should remain the same. Also if we legalized steroids just think what it would say about our country after we have looked down upon Russia for using them in the Olympics for all those years. We would be a contradiction to our own selves. With steroids legalized obviously more people would use them and then we would have more people with problems, more people in hospitals, and more people in coffins.
Steroids cannot be legalized or we would ruin our civilization as we know it! About Me John View my complete profile.
