Leadership Activities - MSHS DECA
With over 16, high school students, ICDC has many great networking opportunities. I have met students from all around the country that I still talk to on a regular basis. The Fall Conference is full of fun, information, and leadership opportunities. Although we work late into the night, it is when we get to know each other and set out our goals for the upcoming year. I have been lucky to be a part of two great officer teams and be able to consider my fellow officers some of my best friends.
During the conference I networked with other officers from around the country and bonded with the Florida officers! It was a perfect combination of a lot of work and just enough fun! This past year there was an opening session never to forget. I love hearing from members and answering questions about scholarships, competition, or anything else DECA related.
The members in DECA are some of the best high school students in the world and I am honored to have had the opportunity to represent you. I have seen not only membership numbers increase but also member involvement.
It brings me so much joy to see chapters grow and I feel accomplished just knowing that I was a part of it! Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime.
Although this is my farewell, this is not goodbye! Motivating the members to participate in DECA activities outside of competition such as community service, regular meetings, and DECA month events can be extremely difficult. It is often referred to as a problem that has plagued mankind for centuries. Okay maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration but I think you get the point.
Make the events fun and interesting so that they want to come and more importantly, come back. Play some games, offer some prizes, and always keep your target market in mind with everything you do. This is a way to get members to continuously participate throughout the year. Give them a log to record the points and at the end of the quarter or the year, you can have a raffle or just award prizes for the students with the most points.
Make sure that the prize is good though if you want to see student participate for the entire year. As always, let me know if you need help with member motivation or anything DECA related. Have a nice start to the New Year and good luck getting adjusted back to school! Follow me on Twitter and Instagram zackschaja. There are four points to the DECA diamond: Academically Prepared , Professionally Responsible , Experienced Leaders , and the one that is arguably the most important, however, often the most forgotten, Community Oriented.
We all, both our chapters and us as individuals, benefit from the support of the community. As a successful organization and members of the community, we have a responsibility to aid those less fortunate and contribute to the common good of society!
The rest of Team 54 are continuing this Helping Hands project and growing it to have even a larger impact on the community. Many chapters around the state have their own community service projects that they do throughout the year. Typically for walkathons or 5K events, there is an admission charge to sign up for the race and the money then goes towards a charitable organization.
What made this event unique was that instead of an admission charge, everybody was required to bring in 10 cans of food which would then be donated. This one amazing chapter donated 7, of cans of food to a local charity, Boca Helping Hands! It was such a great event with vendors and music and everyone dressing up like super heroes I was Batman. Connection is the KEY to Greatness! But are you great officers? That is a question that you should be asking yourself.
Am I doing the best that I can? Am I doing my job? Am I getting chapter members involved? Am I a great leader? Through my experiences as a DECA officer at both the chapter and the state level, I can tell you that by getting chapter members involved at meetings and in decision making, helps to make them interested about those activities.
By putting a poll on your Facebook page favorite T-Shirt design or what food to have at the next meeting for members to give their input can help them feel more involved and accepted by your group. By personally texting members saying that you would love to have them come to the next meeting, you are creating a connection between that person and DECA, a connection that they will continuously think about.
In life and in DECA, a little personal contact can go a long way. Making members feel welcomed and accepted in DECA is the most important thing about being a great officer! If you do that, all of the other things will fall into place, and now you will have friends to help you with the work required to do those things! As always, if you have any questions on being a great DECA officer or anything else, please feel free to email me at zack fldeca.
I challenge all of you to be the best DECA officer that you can! DECA is such a special organization, and I am not just saying that. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Whenever I explain to an adult what DECA is, they always exclaim how great that is and how beneficial it is to our future.
I think it is the members, the students. The students involved in DECA are unlike any other group of high school students. They are driven, motivated, well rounded, and have a sense of intellectual curiosity. And we enjoy it! I hope you enjoyed this blog entry! Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment Would you capture it or just let it slip? Each of you has the opportunity to make a difference in your school, your chapter, and your community this upcoming year.
It will only be this year once; there is no time machine to take you back and redo the year. Florida DECA, will you let it slip? In sports, you work hard for a year and you win the trophy in the end. Now its time to earn it! Over the next year, Team 54 will do everything we can in order to help grow and strengthen this organization.
The Florida DECA Leadership Council will be created in order to give chapters and members the opportunity to voice their opinions about various events and share great ideas that their chapter has developed. Through the use of Facebook and online web meetings, we can all make this project a success and help put your individual chapter on the map!
More information on the Leadership Council will be available in the upcoming weeks. This year, the Leadership Conference will provide you with actual ideas to directly benefit your chapter. After getting feedback from previous years and attending National DECA Leadership Conferences, we believe that this change will help make this great conference even better! My experience as the Florida DECA President has been incredible so far, and I know it will only get better as we implement these new ideas.
Next year when you go, I promise you that Florida will have even a bigger name for itself! I hope that you all enjoy the rest of the school and I wish you the best of luck during your exams!
