He also convinced the intensely driven Ms. Hagberg that downtime could be a luxurious thing and that, much to her amazement, he loved her for who she was, not for her achievements. By December, they had found a house to rent together in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland. Home, a concept Ms. Hagberg had explored extensively in her work but never found in life, became a reality and a refuge.
At mealtimes, they lounged on the floor, plates in their laps. By the following summer, marriage had slid into the equation. On a trip to Germany, Mr. Fisher rallied his courage and asked Alexander Ruger, Ms. She did the same a few weeks later, proposing and presenting him with his own wedding ring, then asking his mother out to tea for her approval.
What had looked like brain cancer was later shown to be inflammation and hemorrhaging from a ruptured pituitary cyst. An ovarian-cancer scare in early was revealed as a benign lesion that may have been responsible for the elevated tumor markers.
