Also, controlling dosing can be particularly difficult with vape pens. How much CBD you absorb depends on how hard and long you inhale, Earleywine says.
In addition, labels on vaping devices can be especially confusing, he says. It can be hard to guess what your dosage really is under some of those situations. Consider trying the lowest dose first—in this case, a single inhale—then wait a few minutes and see whether there is an effect, such as pain relief or reduced anxiety. If not, try another. And avoid holding your breath after inhaling, because that can irritate the lungs.
Tinctures usually in oil form are taken by dropper or spray, straight into your mouth. The CBD used in these forms is extracted from marijuana or hemp plants using pressurized carbon dioxide gas or a solvent such as ethanol. The solvent is then removed under vacuum, Backes says. The remaining CBD is diluted with an oil, such as sesame or coconut oil, to improve the taste and preserve the cannabidiol.
Tinctures are the second-quickest method to absorb CBD, after smoking, Earleywine says, typically taking about 15 to 30 minutes. The quick action could make it especially useful in treating pain or anxiety.
If needed, ask a retail salesperson for help or get out your calculator to calculate the amount of CBD per dose. The price per bottle could be more for a product with a higher CBD content per dose.
Earleywine suggests you drop a dose of tincture under your tongue and hold it there for 30 seconds before swallowing, or apply a single spray of the tincture on the inside of your cheeks. Doing so speeds up the effects of the CBD. If you add a CBD tincture to foods or drinks, it could take up to 30 minutes for it to enter your bloodstream. And ongoing conditions such as chronic pain are likely to better respond with daily doses, he says. Shake the bottle well before using, Backes says, because CBD often gets stuck on the side of the bottle.
Topicals are rubbed directly onto sore muscles or joints, where they may ease pain by reducing inflammation, Earleywine says. CBD balms typically include extracts mixed into a fat, such as beeswax or coconut oil. That recipe not only makes it easier to spread the product on your skin but also allows the CBD to penetrate. That could make them safer—which could be important if you use CBD on a regular basis—considering how little is known about the long-term safety of CBD and other cannabis products.
To be effective, products probably need to have a lot of CBD—which can make them expensive, Backes says. In a retail store, ask whether you can sample the product first, says Tagliaferro of Hemp Garden. She says some people start feeling effects almost immediately after rubbing it on.
Others say they notice relief later in the day, and return to buy the products. At Inday, an East Indian-inspired restaurant in Manhattan, as a promotion, customers could order CBD-infused ghee clarified butter to be added to any dish. Other baked foods, such as brownies and cookies, may have a shorter shelf life and need to be placed in a refrigerator to keep the CBD oil fresh, says Backes, an expert in cannabis science and policy.
You can also consume CBD in pill form. Similar to ingesting CBD in an edible, pills can take upward of 30 minutes or more to digest before you experience an effect, Earleywine says. One benefit though is that the per-pill CBD dose should be clearer on packaging than for other forms. And for chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, where you might be trying to maintain consistent CBD levels in your body, pills may be an easier solution.

I have had surgery, numerous shots, etc. I have been on pain opiods for 14 yrs. I am looking to find something not only for my pain, depression, not sleeping ,anxiety, etc. I know that most my problems come from my chronic pain and being on pain meds for so long.
Can anyone please recommend a CBD oil product and strength for me. I have been reading all the reviews and I just need someone to help. Thanks Donna, for great share! I use cbd oil every day.
I refuse to go without it. I have no arthritic pain at all anymore. I had a hip replacement 3 years ago. I am in need of the other one to be replaced. I was laying awake crying at night because of my hip pain. After I started using the oil my hip has quit aching.
I sometimes forget I even have a problem with it or my arthritis. Had I known about the oil before I had my hip replaced I never would have had the surgery. I am pain free. I use hemp oil. There are 20 mg of cannabiniol in each 1 ml dose https: Does anybody have the same experience as mine? I have chronic Lyme and — as I age — my pain is getting worse.
Tried stopping completely and the pain came back with great ferocity. At this point I think the CBD oil is still expensive, but in the years to come it will become affordable for everybody. I would say that my life made a sweet turn when CBD was introduced to me. Thanks to my far relative. Though the pain is not gone, I can sleep properly and overall feels quite healthy. The best part about CBD is that it does not have any side-effects at least for me unlike the regular medicines.
I can bet on CBD to be the one of best treatment in the future. Anyways, thanks for sharing the information Donna. I need to add this information: I am 74, and had an operation at the t 10 level 4 years ago which has left me with enduring pain, for which I take Percocet.
I also have sciatica, which is getting worse, leading to locomotion difficulties. I cancelled another scheduled lumbar back operation, happily. Unfortunately, I told my physician about this: I had both a urine and blood draw drug screen yesterday, results not back yet. So, this is my comment:. I have neuropathic pain. I never really knew how much to take. There is so much confusion on dosing, so I just take a dropper full now. Should I take it twice a day, or once? I find it very hard to compare brand to brand.
Thank you for your detailed, informative article. If anyone would care to share how much oil they take daily, I would appreciate it. I just started using CBD oil about 6 to 8 weeks ago after much research. He said that he used CBD oil when he started getting restless leg syndrome. He would take the oil and put about 2 or 3 dots behind his knee and to his surprise, the tingling went away right away.
I found this hard to believe, but after hearing from some other people on the benefits of CBD, I decided to give it a try. I had to pay 50 dollars for an oz.
The first night that I got restless leg syndrome and went into the bathroom and put 3 dots behind my knees on both legs it was only a matter of seconds before I had relief.
I also rubbed some on a couple of sour spots near my back, and it seems to have helped. Im also, in a better mood, I feel more alert and more full of energy. I believe it to be the thing of the future! I have tried several different CBD products from different US companies, capsules, drops, sprays, even a balm….. I do hope this will be approved since the one was approved of someone attacking marijuanna supporting opiate pills yet lying on marijuanna to keep rights to their pain pills.
Patients like me stage 4 cancer up recurrence were just cold turkey took off left pain meds left to feel cancer and opiate withdrawal pain. I too never overtook my pain meds. Two years of pure suffering goes by and I give in to medical marijuana and cannibas oil and my life changed! I went from hospice 2mo max to hospice leaving my health improved so much! A surgery where tumors on bile ducts, liver was cancelled, the pain gone vomiting stopped and MRI confirmed tumors gone.
Opiates can not cure conditions, slow or kill cancer or near what cannibas-marijuanna is known to do. Until medical marijuana I continued to slowly lose my battle to cancer, not blaming pain meds at all only saying they provided no medical benefit other than pain relief and pleasure feeling.
I only use minimum amount early morning and late night. I have went on to teach myself about other things like enzymes and other plant life to alkaline, anti-inflammatory my body. I support opiates when needed but highly support medical marijuana and cannibas oil..
Marijuana is not addictive unless the brain is not fully developed but even then in kids it can save their life: Noone has ever overdosed or died of marijuana per DEA.
Although I advocate for being fair to true pain patients on opiates. I did my research and have great product. I hate taking pills! I also have DDD, RA, Fibro, sciatica, ruptured discs in lower back, brain lesions and seizures and adrenaline tumors 3 ….
There are 20 mg of cannabiniol in each 1 ml dose. Just read your article about CBD oil and checked the label on the oil I bought 9 months ago from a legal dispensary in Pendleton, Oregon. Across from the Subway. It lists herbs and supplements long before CBD oil and it is a derivative of Hemp oil. I had not done any research prior to my purchase and relied on the folks at the marijuana shop to sell me a good product. Buyer beware is the best advice I got from this article. I have not achieved any pain relief from this product and use about 1 ml under my tongue with the dropper in the bottle.
I intend to find a full spectrum CBD oil and I hope to notice a difference in pain relief. Thanks for the great information. I had desperately hoped for pain control but while it helped a little while on low dose fentanyl, without I get no relief to speak of. The positive is in its helping my severe digestive issues! I have not been able to eat or digest what I ate for many years and with the use of this oil I am actually gaining weight!
I was losing as much as five pounds a week!
